Assessment Information

The Level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering requires the completion of centre and work based knowledge and practical assessments designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills required to apply for Gas Safe registration.

Unit Details

This qualification consists of 12 units in total:

Mandatory Core Units

• Unit 1: K/617/9471 Understand and apply health and safety in gas utilisation

• Unit 2: M/617/9472 Understanding scientific principles in gas utilisation
•  
• Unit 3:
• T/617/9473 Understanding combustion and properties of gas (natural gas and LPG)
•  
• Unit 4: A/617/9474 Understanding buildings, services and structures
•  
• Unit 5: F/617/9475 Understanding gas safety
•  
• Unit 6: J/617/9476 Specific core gas safety

Mandatory Pathway Units 

• Unit 7: L/617/9477 Install and maintain domestic gas water heaters and wet central heating appliances

• Unit 8: R/617/9478 Install and maintain domestic gas cookers, tumble dryers and leisure appliances
•  
• Unit 9: Y/617/9479 Install and maintain domestic gas space heating appliances
•  
• Unit 10: L/617/9480 Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques

Optional Units

• Unit 11: R/617/9481 Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques
•  
• Unit 12: Y/617/9482 Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Water Byelaws in the UK

Each pathway is achieved by completing a selection of the units:

Pathway 1 (aligned to CCN 1, CENWAT, HTR 1, CKR1, LAU 1, LEI 1, MET 1, CoNGLP1 PD and Unvented Hot Water) consists of 10 mandatory units (units 1-10). Units 11 & 12 are optional.

Pathway 2 (aligned to CCN 1, CENWAT, MET1, CoNGLP1 PD and Unvented Hot Water) consists of 8 mandatory units (units 1-7 and unit 10). Units 11 & 12 are optional.

Pathway 3 (aligned to CCN 1, HTR 1, CKR1, LAU 1, LEI 1, MET1 and CoNGLP1 PD) consists of 8 mandatory units (units 1-6 and units 8-9). Unit 12 is optional.

Pathway 4 (aligned to CCN 1, CKR1, LAU 1, LEI 1, MET1, and CoNGLP1 PD) consists of 7 mandatory units (units 1-6 and unit 8). Unit 12 is optional.

Further Information

The Level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering has been designed to be used by apprentices who are completing the Gas Engineering Operative Apprenticeship Standard. Details of on-programme training and EPA elements can be seen within the Assessment Plan.

The qualification is also available to other learners wishing to pursue a gas engineering career within the Building Services Engineering sector.

The qualification is supported by industry and regulated by OFQUAL.

The holder of this qualification is recognised as being competent to carry out gas work as defined in the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and can apply for Gas Safe Registration in the gas work categories defined in the chosen pathway.
